Design Clinic #3: Edwardian Front Door

This is the third post in my Design Clinic series where I answer your interior design challenges.

Sarah sent me this photograph of the front door of her Edwardian terraced home. My first thought was "Wow! Amazing tiles!"

The help Sarah was looking for was in choosing a colour for the door, as well as selecting glazing in terms of both shape and design.

For the paint colour, I would stick to something quite dark for both the frame and the timber of the door itself. There are a lot of different colours going on in the tiles both outside and inside and so I would avoid bringing anything too bright into this mix as it may start to feel confused. Something like Mylands 'Rothschild Street' (1) could work, though I would test any paint samples against the tiles first! All that said, a vibrant green may work if you were set on going brighter. Calke Green by Farrow & Ball might be a good option (2).

For the glazing, Sarah mentioned being keen on stained glass, possibly with an Art Nouveau design. Curves and whiplash motifs (3) could work well here, but again I would be careful not to overdo the pattern and detail. You want to keep a reasonable amount of glass in order to let the light through, so you could consider two strips like in both images 3 and 5. I selected image 5 as you might want to think about what colour the door will be painted on the inside. It doesn't have to be the same as outside!

Finally, do spend time looking at door furniture. There is some beautiful ironmongery available. The choice between chrome and brass will depend on the fittings you have on the inside of your home. Either way, check these against the paint and glass colours you end up choosing, as well as the existing tiles to ensure that everything ties together. I love Willow and Stone's door furniture including this centre door knob in antique brass and the brass letter plate with a clapper.
